Love Demonstrated

1 John 4:10-11

"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.   "Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another."

Love one another.  These are powerful words.  Let the words sink in.

The other day while standing in a checkout line at a store, I watched impatience in action.  The guy being helped clearly thought the checkout man should have been able to work faster.  In the end, the impatient customer was able to buy his groceries; however, I'll bet he'll have a difficult time explaining God's love to the store employee.

We have to get away from the "me first" syndrome.  We are all guilty of it: cutting in line, demanding our way, looking out for only ourselves, displaying impatience and more.

We can love one other because Jesus loved us first

  • Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
  • 1 John 4:19, "We love because He first loved us."
  • John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. . "
  • John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

We should love one another without excuses

  • Not just the people we like
  • Not only the ones who treat me well
  • Not just when it is convenient

What does "Loving one another" look like?  Here are some thoughts:

  1. Love displays kindness, compassion and forgiveness: Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
  2. Love serves each other: Galatians 5:13, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”
  3. Love submits to each other: Ephesians 5:21, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
