Liberty law student becomes voice for sterilization victims

Mark Bold

Mark Bold, a 2013 Liberty University School of Law Juris Doctor candidate, has used his legal education to be a voice for victims of crimes against humanity, committed by several states decades ago.

Ground zero for Virginia’s Eugenical Sterilization Act of 1924 took place in a facility less than 10 miles from campus — the Central Virginia Training Center, formerly known as the Virginia Colony for the Epileptic and Feebleminded.

Through his research, Bold learned that of the 33 states that carried out the law, no state has ever compensated the victims in any way. During his second year of law school, Bold befriended several victims still residing in Virginia. He became their voice as he launched the Justice for Sterilization Victims Project to encourage legislation to financially compensate victims.

“I believe that all individuals are endowed by their Creator and have intrinsic value, and we are consistent in this message when we demand the government to compensate living victims for what their egregious law took away,” Bold said. “Eugenics is completely outside their authority.”
