LU's IT department is a leader in its field
Liberty University’s Information Technology Department now operates a testing center for high-tech professionals seeking certifications in products such as Microsoft, Cisco, Apple and Oracle.
The center fills a need in the city and region where high-tech jobs have significantly increased over the last decade.
“Students and the general public can use our testing center to become certified in fields of expertise that will help them reach their career goals,” said Jason Rawlings, director of Customer Support in Information Services at Liberty.
The main benefit of the new local testing center will be reduced time and travel, saving the university an estimated $3,000 a year in testing-related expenses. One of the IT Testing Center’s first clients was Nelson County High School, whose business teacher, Melissa Williams, brought her class of 10 students to the center to take various Microsoft exams.
“The technology team was very effective. The room was comfortable and quiet, and each of my students felt completely at ease in the testing situation,” Williams said. “This was our first experience with the LU Testing Center, and I will definitely be bringing my students back again.”
Liberty’s IT Department has also made other major advances, as it recently upgraded the Wi-Fi network on campus in order to expand Liberty’s wireless networking performance and coverage. The new wireless network is available in Liberty’s 123 buildings, covering 2.9 million square feet of facilities.
Liberty’s IT Department was also recognized in “Get Set” Magazine, as Connie Allison, director of Liberty’s IT Operations, shared insight with high school students about what it is like to work in the technology field.
