Nine Liberty University students are getting an up-close view at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., this week.

They went as hospitality volunteers, but the RNC ended up with an overflow of help after Hurricane Gustav caused the Republicans to scale back some events. That left most of the LU students without volunteer tasks — yet they were far from disappointed since they got to watch most of the convention in person.

“The highlight was definitely seeing Sarah Palin last night. She was incredible,” said student Jennifer Schmidt, in a phone interview on Thursday. “One girl in our trip even said she had tears in her eyes after seeing Palin come out. We were already set on voting for McCain, most of us, but now we’re actually excited about it because she’s just brought this new energy.”

In Schmidt’s opinion, McCain’s vice presidential running mate will be a woman to watch.

“Hearing her talk last night, she’s so strong,” Schmidt said.

Most of the LU students attending the event are from Liberty’s Helms School of Government. The school sent out an email to students asking if they would like to volunteer, and the first few people who replied were given the privilege.

The students arrived in Minnesota on Aug. 28 and will return to Lynchburg Friday.

On behalf of the Helms School of Government, administrative assistant to the dean Brooke Hayden said this trip is just one of the ways that the school prepares students for a future in government.

“It gives them a really good idea as to what they can expect,” she said.

The nine students who attended the RNC are: Scott MacDonald, Grace Woodson, Michelle Cook, Sarah Blanzy, Chelsey Fortin, Matthew McCain, Jeremy Lemon, Jennifer Schmidt, and James Kimmey.
