Liberty hosts record CFAW crowd

April 11, 2008 : Mitzi Bible

The Vines Center at Liberty University filled up fast for Friday’s convocation services as guests to the university’s College For A Weekend event filed in.

College For A Weekend, or CFAW, is an opportunity for prospective students to experience campus life at Liberty. It is held four times a year.

This weekend, according to Dr. Ron Godwin, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Liberty University, “is the largest College for a Weekend in our history.”

He announced there are more than 2,600 visitors on campus for the event (about 1,900 are prospective students).

The event kicked off on Thursday night with check-in and a welcome session. Buses arrived from as far away as Toronto, Canada and Florida carrying students, parents and youth pastors. There are 52 churches represented.

The event runs through Sunday and includes opportunities for guests to attend classes, meet with professors and admissions counselors and experience campus life through a concert and other recreational activities.

At the convocation service, the Rev. Jonathan Falwell, pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, welcomed the visitors and gave a talk on being committed to Christ in every profession.

Students and guests also got a chance to hear from Liberty University alumnus and NFL running back Sam Gado, who spoke about his experience at Liberty.

“Because of College For A Weekend, that’s actually why I ended up coming to Liberty,” he said. “I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I grew most when I was here [at LU]. God used Liberty to grow me. It provided a wonderful environment. Part of that growth had to do with some of the friends that I met. … God really used them to strengthen my walk.”

He told CFAW visitors that Liberty “is an excellent place, a step for you to equip yourself for the work of the Kingdom.”
