It has distributed more than $356 million in humanitarian aid in 60 countries and has planted more than 74,000 churches, resulting in more than 7 million new believers. Brewer is also a cancer survivor. After being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, he underwent 18 surgeries and 18 months of chemotherapy. His battle with cancer prompted a large prayer meeting at Liberty, and he attributes his miraculous recovery largely to the prayers from his alma mater.

Brewer received his Doctor of Divinity from North Florida Baptist Theological Seminary in 1991. Liberty bestowed an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree to him at the 2010 baccalaureate service.

Brewer lives with his wife, Patty, and his son, Josh (who attends Liberty), in Forest. He has three married daughters and six grandsons.
