Liberty ranks in top 10 of ‘Best for Vets’ colleges

Liberty University recently ranked No. 9 in the “Best for Vets 2010” survey conducted by Military Times EDGE magazine. EDGE chose its top 100 schools after considering more than 4,000 colleges and universities. Liberty was top among Virginia schools.

The survey rated schools on four criteria: financial assistance, academic flexibility, campus culture and support services.

Liberty scored a perfect five stars in academic flexibility for its participation in programs such as the Servicemembers’ Opportunity Colleges (SOC) network, for awarding college credit for equivalency exams and for its military-friendly policies.

The financial assistance category looked at benefits such as military discounts, waivers, scholarships and programs, and gave points for financial flexibility and leniency. Liberty’s four-star rating in this category helped secure its top-10 ranking.

A four-and-a-half-star rating for Liberty in campus culture came as no surprise. The magazine recognized LU for its high percentage of veterans in the student body and faculty, its military programs, and all-around awareness of veterans’ needs, issues and traditions.

In the support services category, Liberty scored for its dedicated military staff, its outreach and sensitivity to veterans and its various military support programs.

Liberty also provides a variety of support services for its online military students, including a vast online library, bookstore and writing center. Online ministry services and several online support groups allow military students to connect and encourage one another as they serve our country.

Liberty’s Military Affairs Office helps secure benefits for active-duty personnel, reservists, guardsmen, veterans and their spouses, such as Tuition Assistance, Veterans Affairs benefits (including the new Post 9/11 GI BILL and Yellow Ribbon Scholarship), fee waivers and book vouchers. Liberty also offers the Heroes Fund Scholarship for veterans wounded in the Gulf Wars and the spouses of those who lost their lives in those conflicts.

Liberty had 15,289 military students enrolled in May, the highest ever at one time, meaning nearly one-third of Liberty students are servicemembers, veterans or military spouses, representing all branches of the U.S. armed forces.

Many Liberty military students also joined the ranks of Liberty alumni this year. The Class of 2010 included 995 military students (10 residential and 985 online); 249 graduates of Liberty University Online graduates were present at Commencement.
