Liberty mourns loss of student in train trestle accident

November 9, 2014 : Liberty University News Service

Liberty University students were notified by their Student Leadership teams this morning that classmate Jonathan Gregoire, 21, from Wilbraham, Mass., was killed in an accident on a train trestle in Lynchburg on Saturday.

Two individuals were injured in the accident, according to a news release from the Lynchburg Police Department. The second individual who was with Gregoire was not a Liberty student.

Liberty President Jerry Falwell issued the following statement:

“Jon will be terribly missed by so many at Liberty University. He was known and loved for his adventurous spirit and his spiritual depth. My wife and I both were friends with Jon on Facebook and, while we did not know him well, we shared many mutual friends who thought so highly of him. His last Facebook post on Oct. 30 reflected on how God and Jesus Christ gave life its ultimate meaning. The Gregoire family will be held up in prayer by the entire Liberty University community.”

Gregoire was a senior majoring in business administration-marketing, with a certificate in Bible. He served as a prayer leader with Liberty’s Student Leadership and planned to become a missionary.

Liberty’s Campus Pastors team is currently meeting with students and the university’s Student Counseling Services is also being made available to those in need.

The university is planning a memorial service to celebrate Jon’s life and the impact he had on so many. Details will be released when they are available.
