Former U.S. Sen. George Allen (Va.) visited Liberty University’s Helms School of Government on Wednesday to share the wisdom he’s gained from years in political leadership and to answer student questions. The event was timed to coincide with Constitution Day, celebrating the ratification of the crucial founding document.

“I love being here at Liberty University,” Allen said. “It is an outstanding university, it is well led … (the university is) doing a fantastic job of attracting the best type of students from all over the country.”

Allen shared many stories and experiences from his life and offered advice on leading in government. He emphasized the importance of standing up for one’s principles, keeping promises, working with others, and seeking the Lord’s guidance when making difficult decisions. Allen said that when running for office, a person should emphasize what he stands for rather than what he is against. After his speech, the former senator took time to answer questions from students.

Allen served in Virginia’s state legislature as its 67th governor from 1994-98, and in both bodies of Congress. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991-93 and in the U.S. Senate from 2000-06.

During his term as governor, Allen brought about reforms that would make Virginia a national model of economic development, public safety, education accountability, welfare reform, and more. He accomplished his reform agenda with bi-partisan support.

As a senator he advocated for Virginia’s families and for tax cuts that would promote job creation. Since leaving the U.S. Senate, Allen continues to advocate the values he promoted as an elected representative. Allen currently serves on the Reagan Ranch Board of Governors of Young America’s Foundation as a Reagan Ranch Presidential Scholar.  He also founded the American Energy Freedom Center.

Following the event, Allen, who is the son of a former NFL coach, met with Flames head coach Turner Gill. He then stayed to watch Liberty’s football team practice.
