UPDATE: Help for military students continues with more financial support

Liberty University has announced it will offer more support to military students in the wake of the government shutdown. Even now that government operations have resumed, some students are still being affected by the halt in Tuition Assistance (TA) funding. The university is encouraging students to apply for the military and veteran funding they are now eligible to receive. Liberty has committed up to $5 million to cover the remaining needs and to ensure that its service members can continue their education without delay.

Support extended to military students during government shutdown

Liberty University Online is sending messages of encouragement to its military students affected by the government shutdown, which has halted Tuition Assistance (TA) funding.

Liberty University is one of the largest providers of online higher education to our nation’s military students, with more than 21,000 enrolled. Nearly a quarter of Liberty students are service members, veterans, or military spouses.

Upon hearing the news that TA funding has been cut, the university’s Office of Military Affairs sent an email to students encouraging them to remain enrolled in their courses and offering support for their families.

“We are aware of the impact the government shutdown is having on our military students and their families, and we want to help,” said Emily Foutz, director of the Office of Military Affairs. “Our goal is to identify the specific need of each student and provide a solution to best meet that need.”

Foutz said the university is encouraging students to explore alternative funding options they may qualify for at this time. The university is also offering special payment plans and has deferred deadlines to allow time for students to overcome any obstacles.

The numerous military benefits specific to the university will not change for service members, veterans, and military spouses, including tuition discounts, fee waivers, and free book vouchers.

Foutz said the staff is working with students on an individual basis to help them continue to pursue their dreams of earning a college degree.

“We have Military Affairs counselors to assist with each need and answer every question,” Foutz said. “Liberty University values the sacrifices that our service members make daily to secure our freedom. It is a privilege to serve those who serve our nation.”

Counselors can be reached at (855) 355-4947 from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. EST Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday.
