Lowering your stress about finances

Today is National Stress Day and there is arguably nothing in life as stressful as finances. For many, finance is not a thought until after graduation. Learning to manage your money is one of the most valuable skills you can develop. This can be done at any age, but the younger you master it, the smoother your life will be.

There are many different approaches to budgeting. Find what works for you but stay adaptable. I know when I got married my husband and I both had a good way to manage our money, but they were very different ways. As two young professionals learning to combine our money it was challenging, but we had to learn a whole new way to work together. We should not wait for our spouse to handle this for us, though that might seem easier. There will always be times in life when we must lean on others and having the knowledge of finances will make this smoother.

Three things to ponder…

  1. It is important to have priorities and goals with your money. This is important for your monthly spending and your long-term goals. For most of us, this will change at different points in life.
  2. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you, Hebrews 13:5. Contentment is the way to succeed with your money.
  3. Lastly, giving with your financial resources is a wonderful way to honor God with what he has blessed you with. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver, 2 Corinthians 9:7.
