Seminary raises funds for Godparent Home

President of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary Dr. Ergun Caner initiated a special offering for the local Liberty Godparent Home at LU’s Wednesday convocation.

Money will benefit young women who are facing pregnancy alone, providing them with shelter, medical care, and a network of Christian families who are willing to adopt.

The Rev. Jerry Falwell Sr. started the pro-life charity as a ministry of Thomas Road Baptist Church more than two decades ago.

“It is not enough to just be anti-something. You’ve got to provide an alternative,” Caner said.

The offering is part of a larger Heart Ministries charitable project that the seminary is beginning for the first time. Under the project, LBTS will select certain charities to support each year as a way of putting “feet to their prayers.”

The seminary will base its fundraising efforts on the money the Liberty Godparent Home needs, he said, adding that the number of young women served depends upon donations.

“It is an amazing ministry,” Caner said.

Caner told students they could continue donating to the Godparent Home through the Baby Bottle Campaign that launched immediately after convocation. Students may fill the baby bottles placed in their residence halls through Oct. 15.

In addition to the pro-life charity, Caner said the Challenged Sports Exchange will also be a Heart Ministry this year. The local non-profit organization funds and manages recreational activities and athletic programs for individuals with mental or physical challenges who live in Central Virginia.
