Online Academy recommended for full accreditation

Last week, Liberty University Online Academy received an “extremely positive exit interview” regarding regional accreditation, according to the school’s dean, Jay Spencer.

The Online Academy offers turn-key online curriculum for grades 3-12 that is taught from a Christian perspective. The program grew out of Liberty University’s award-winning distance learning program — Liberty University Online — and was started in 2007.

The recent review came from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), which now approves accreditation for schools in 30 states. The quality assurance review team within SACS CASI “gave us a great review, thanked us for a tremendous visit, and told us they were recommending us for full accreditation to the commission,” which meets in January, Spencer said. After the commission’s final blessing, the school can begin using the SACS CASI logo in its promotion material and bill itself as a SACS CASI accredited school.

“SACS accreditation will definitely help us build enrollment,” said Spencer. LUOA currently has about 650 students enrolled — double the amount the school had at the same time last year.

“We continue to enroll students on a rolling basis,” said Spencer, referring to the school’s system that allows students to start curriculum at any time during the year. “We expect to reach or exceed our goal of 1,000 students by the end of the fiscal year.”
