Liberty University is mourning the loss of former mathematics professor and university administrator Dr. Garth E. Runion, who passed away on June 3 at age 84.

Runion dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the service of others. In his obituary, he was called a “devoted educator, mentor, and academic leader” who “leaves behind a legacy of excellence in higher education and a deep commitment to serving God.”

In addition to Mississippi College and Grove City College, Runion served Liberty University for many years in several roles, including vice provost for academic administration, associate vice president for institutional effectiveness, and professor of mathematics.

“We would not be the university that we are today without the sacrifice and commitment of Garth Runion, and so many others like him,” said Liberty Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Scott Hicks. “The foundation that he and his generation built at Liberty is without measure. It was truly my honor and my privilege to have been impacted by him. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the family as they celebrate his life.”

Runion is survived by his loving wife, Laura, of nearly 60 years, and their children: Amy (Mark) Bruno, Mindy (Jeff) Peterson, Garth (Kristen) Runion II, and Amanda (Brian) Yates. He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren. Dr. Runion is also remembered fondly by colleagues, students, and friends who were touched by his wisdom, humility, sense of humor and unwavering dedication.

A celebration of life service is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, at 3 p.m. at Riverside Church.

Runion teaches a class in 1983.
