2021 Homecoming Weekend one of the most anticipated in school history

With the added excitement of the 50th Anniversary of Liberty University’s founding, this year’s Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 8-9, will be a celebration like none before it.

“Coming off of the cancellations due to COVID-19, this is a time to get together with the Liberty family and be face to face as opposed to seeing everyone virtually,” Director of Alumni Relations Giuseppe Cucci said. “It’ll be amazing to celebrate the university’s 50 years of Training Champions for Christ.”

Alumni are encouraged to register and purchase event tickets online. (Those who register before Homecoming Weekend will receive discounts.)

“It’s going to be such a big year, and this will probably be one of the best attended Homecomings we’ve had in a long time,” Director of Student Activities Cort Comfort said. “Because we’ve had a year off and because of the 50th Anniversary, there’s a lot of pieces that are building up to a really big weekend this year. We’re very excited.”

At this year’s Homecoming Weekend, the Liberty family will also be celebrating 50 years of Training Champions for Christ.

Beginning on Friday, Oct. 8, at 9 a.m., alumni can check in at the LaHaye Event Space to receive giveaway bags (register by Sept. 3 to guarantee Homecoming T-shirts for every member of the group). Check-in will remain open until 7 p.m. and will open again on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Following Convocation in the Vines Center at 10:30 a.m., guests can choose from a variety of events and activities in the afternoon, including Meet the Dean and Academic Open Houses at various academic buildings and a carnival outside the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center featuring a Ferris wheel, food trucks, and games. An Alumni Reunion is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. in the Montview Ballroom.

“At this reunion we really want to try and celebrate everyone that has come to Liberty University, whether they came in 1971 or if they were an online student,” Cucci said. “All of our alumni are very accomplished and have done things to change the world.”

That night, the Flames’ Division I men’s hockey team will face off against the University of Delaware at the LaHaye Ice Center while the School of Music will host its 50th Anniversary Homecoming Concert, featuring alumni guest performances, at Thomas Road Baptist Church. The evening will conclude with a bonfire at the East Campus Satellite Parking Lot, open to all alumni, faculty, staff, and students.

On Friday evening of Liberty’s 2021 Homecoming weekend, the School of Music will host its 50th Anniversary Homecoming Concert at Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Saturday morning’s activities will begin at 8 a.m. with the Deep Hollow Half Marathon and 5K, starting and ending at the Hydaway Outdoor Center.

Later that day, the Homecoming Parade down University Boulevard and the Alumni Tailgate on the Outdoor Football Practice Field will build anticipation for Flames Football’s matchup against Middle Tennessee State.

“The weekend will be packed full with amazing events for everyone,” Cucci said. “The football game will be the one where everyone will gather (student, alumni, Liberty Friends, and staff) to cheer on our Liberty Flames to victory.”

Homecoming Weekend events will wrap up Saturday evening with a hockey rematch with Delaware at 7 p.m.

Additionally, campus tours will be offered throughout the entire weekend for those interested and campus recreational facilities including Snowflex and the Montview Bowling Alley will be available for the Liberty family.
