Lacrosse website touts Flames’ program, facilities as nation’s best

Liberty University’s men’s lacrosse team and its first-class facilities are showcased in a feature posted Monday on MCLA.LAXAllStars.com, a fan-based website covering the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA), in which the Flames compete.

The story, complete with photos of the team’s facilities and athletic gear, compares the Flames favorably to NCAA Division I programs for the way former Liberty player and current Head Coach Kyle McQuillan has overseen its rapid growth and tremendous success.

Since the program was revived in 2011, Liberty has ascended through the ranks of the MCLA, capturing its first SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) Division II tournament championship and Northwest Region regular-season title in 2013, when it reached the MCLA DII Final Four and finished ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Last season, the Flames made a successful transition to MCLA Division I, winning the SELC Northwest Region crown by defeating Virginia Tech in the regular-season final. They then avenged a regular-season loss to Florida State before being eliminated by the Hokies in the SELC Tournament championship game, narrowly missing a trip to the MCLA DI Tournament and ending the year ranked No. 21.

A press box and expanded bleachers were added to the Liberty Lacrosse Field, accommodating a record-setting crowd for the second annual Blackout game, a 9-7 win over North Carolina State played after midnight on March 29.

After holding their fourth annual Alumni Game on Oct. 4, during Homecoming Weekend, the Flames will host a four-team, round-robin Fall Tournament on Saturday, with shortened games against Randolph College, an NCAA Division III program from Lynchburg, at 10 a.m. and MCLA DI Northwest Region rival Virginia Tech at noon and N.C. State at 3 p.m.
