Flames notch big win over Ball State

The Liberty Flames went on the road this past Saturday and pulled off a huge upset of a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team. The Flames used a late touchdown by Mike Brown and numerous key defensive stands to upend Ball State of the Mid-American Conference, 27-23, in Muncie, Ind.

Liberty is now 2-0 for the year. The victory marked the program's second victory over an FBS team. The first win was in 1989 against another MAC opponent, Eastern Michigan, in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Following Saturday’s win, Liberty waived Saturday night’s curfew to allow students to go to the Lynchburg Regional Airport at 1:30 a.m. to greet the team.

Liberty is now ranked in the top 15 in the nation in two Football Championship Subdivision polls. Next up for the Flames is a matchup against Robert Morris in Pennsylvania. The Flames travel to Harrisonburg, Va., on Sept. 25 to face James Madison University, a team that pulled off a huge upset of Virginia Tech on Sept. 11.

The team returns home to open the renovated Williams Stadium on Oct. 2 to take on Savannah State.
