Program offers free tuition to qualifying veterans

Veterans who qualify to receive the maximum educational benefits under the new Post-9/11 GI Bill can now attend Liberty University tuition-free, thanks to the new Yellow Ribbon Program.

Under the bill, which takes effect Aug. 1, a percentage of tuition and fees are covered by Veterans Affairs, based on the amount of time served, up to the highest in-state tuition rate. (Veterans must have served at least 90 days of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001 with an honorable discharge.) In addition, the VA created the Yellow Ribbon Program for private institutions like Liberty, with tuitions that exceed the highest in-state tuition rate. As a participant, Liberty has agreed to split any costs that remain after GI Bill benefits 50/50 with the VA for those who qualify for the maximum benefit.

Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, qualified residential students receive a basic allowance for housing and a book stipend for up to $1,000 per year.

Liberty has already awarded 11 students the Yellow Ribbon Scholarship for fall 2009. Liberty has agreed to contribute up to $10,500 per year to each scholarship recipient and will award the scholarship to as many students who qualify.
