World Help founder speaks at Friday convocation

Vernon Brewer, the first graduate of Liberty University and the founder and president of World Help, spoke to students at Friday’s convocation about the importance of having a vision and the defining moments in our lives.

“Jerry Falwell taught me that vision is seeing the invisible and making it visible,” he said.

Brewer shared his testimony of being diagnosed with cancer and how he was healed after Dwayne Carson, Liberty’s vice president of Spiritual Development and director of the Office of Student Leadership, conducted a 24-hour prayer chain with Liberty students on campus. He said during this defining moment he decided to live a life doing things that would outlive him.

Through World Help, a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian organization that was founded to meet the spiritual and physical needs of hurting people around the world, Brewer has conducted international evangelistic campaigns and rallies in more than 67 foreign countries and has taken over 4,000 people into the mission field. World Help’s headquarters are in nearby Forest, Va.

Brewer, whose son, Josh, is a freshman at Liberty, encouraged students to do something that would make a difference in someone else’s life, and to be moved by compassion.
“Compassion requires action,” he said.

Brewer is the author of The Forgotten Children: Hungry. Hopeless. Running for their Lives, Why? Answers to Weather the Storms of Life, Children of Hope: Be touched. Be inspired. Be changed, and Defining Moments: A Journey to the Ends of the Earth and Back.
