Tony Nolan leads Spiritual Emphasis Week services

Spiritual Emphasis Week at Liberty University is moving hearts and changing lives.

“Nothing is more important than what we’re doing this week at Liberty — knowing Christ and making Him known,” said Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. at Wednesday’s convocation. “Through Spiritual Emphasis Week events, Liberty is rendering unto God the things that are God’s. Students stayed up all Friday night praying for this school and its leadership. We deeply appreciate your prayers.”

The week kicked off Aug. 29 with an All Night of Prayer event outside Pate Chapel that drew more than 4,000 to bow before God and ask for his guidance this year, followed by five special services Monday through Wednesday led by dynamic Christian speaker Tony Nolan.

Nolan has served as tour pastor for top Christian band Casting Crowns and is the author of “Faith Fuel: A Refueling Journey.”

Campus Pastor for Discipleship Dwayne Carson emailed the Chancellor after Nolan’s message at Monday’s evening service, saying he’d never seen so many students — nearly 250 — respond to the Gospel on the first night of Spiritual Emphasis Week. On Tuesday night, Carson estimated that more than 1,000 students responded to Nolan’s challenge to “throw away the trash” in their lives.

“I believe we will see lots of students living more like Christ after tonight’s service,” Carson wrote. “Tony Nolan is truly being used to speak the Word into students’ lives.”

In his Wednesday morning convocation message, Nolan preached from Matthew Chapter 7 about being an authentic Christian and not a pretender.

“I believe that God wants to give us a reality check this morning,” he said.

He told students that they should not be afraid of what they might have to let go of to be near God.

“There is nothing— nothing— that you will let go of that God will not fill your hand with something greater still,” he said.
