Jonathan Falwell becomes a vice chancellor at Liberty

The Rev. Jonathan Falwell, senior pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, has been named Vice Chancellor for spiritual affairs at Liberty University.

He previously held the title of Executive Vice President for Spiritual Affairs. He will continue to provide counsel and recommendations to his brother, Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr., on matters related to the doctrinal integrity of the university.

He will also advise him on matters of faith and practice related to the hiring of faculty and other employees as well as the code of conduct governing student life.

“Liberty was given birth by Thomas Road Baptist Church, and the church has always played a role in making sure Liberty’s doctrine and theology is in keeping with the beliefs of TRBC,” said Jerry Falwell Jr. “He [Jonathan] has a keen eye for any deviations that might occur from doctrine or in practice that is sort of in the wrong direction.”

Jonathan Falwell said he will continue to work directly with campus pastors in all spiritual aspects of the university, including all academic areas, “to make sure we never step outside of the boundaries of what this university is all about.”

“We need to make sure we’re doing everything we possibly can to ensure that every professor that walks onto this campus is committed to our mission, to make sure our students are never confused about what our mission is … and to make sure that we never go in any direction that we as a university shouldn’t go,” he said. “That’s the area that I’m going to focus on and do everything I can to ensure that my dad’s life’s work stays continuing to fulfill the mission that he had in 1971.”
