Tony Perkins speaks on America’s need for spiritual change

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council and a Liberty alumnus, returned to his alma mater to speak at Monday’s convocation. The former Louisiana legislator spoke about the need for change in America — not of the political persuasion but rather a heartfelt spiritual change.

“It’s not just the politicians who want change, it’s not just the voters that want change, but God himself wants change in America. He wants real life-transforming, eternity-impacting change.”

Perkins then cited Matthew 4:17, noting when Jesus Christ walked the Earth, His followers expected a political leader, but instead encountered someone who spiritually impacted the lives of men and women. Perkins said while political reform and voting for the nation’s leaders is important, there is an even greater need for salvation and repentance.

“We should be looking to change the world through a changed life in relationship with Jesus Christ,” he said.

Perkins pointed out that if Christians committed themselves to sharing the Gospel with others they could not only double the population of believers, but also legitimately change the world for Christ. In a world where people are clamoring for a transformation, God’s desire is for Christians to help transform the hearts of others, he said.

“(God) wants to bring us to a point where our hearts feel His pain and His brokenness for those that do not know Him. And at that point when our hearts are broken for the broken, He can use us to mend the broken heart.”
