Alumnus Jamie George speaks at Wednesday convocation

Liberty alumnus Jamie George spoke about humility in answering God’s call to serve others during Wednesday’s convocation.

George, now lead pastor of The Journey Church in Nashville, Tenn., described how God used him as he began his first church. “I don’t know why God chooses to use me, but I’m grateful that he does,” he said.

In the early years, George, originally from New York, said he grew greatly discouraged over why God would want to send him to Nashville to begin a church. As he prayed about it, he heard God say to him, “You’re not the star in this story. You’re just the supporting cast member.”

It was then that George said he had a paradigm shift in his way of thinking, and he began to focus on becoming a good listener instead of simply a good leader.

In Matthew 5:13, God calls us as believers to be “salt and light,” he said. George told students as salt and light in the world, it is their mission to bring “flavor and warmth” to the lost so that they may be brought to praise Jesus.

He concluded by saying that this mission is carried out through affirming and touching the lives of others, and he urged students to go out in the world and serve others at their points of need.
