Jonathan Falwell speaks at Wednesday convocation

Jonathan Falwell, senior pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church and vice president for spiritual affairs at Liberty University, spoke at Wednesday’s convocation on how to obtain greatness.

In order to achieve greatness, he said, students must understand what greatness is not.

Using the story of Job and how he lost all his possessions but continued to follow God’s will, Falwell illustrated that greatness is not achieved in materialism, fame or power.

“The world will tell you [that] all that is important is looking out for yourself,” he said. “But Job knew that greatness came and resulted from knowing God as our source.”

To achieve greatness, he said, we must follow the will of God as Job did and live life for God’s glory, rather than our own.

“It’s not about us,” Falwell said. “It’s all about God.”

Falwell ended his talk by urging students to follow God: “Greatness can never be achieved without goodness and goodness can never be achieved without God.”
