Phill Kline joins Liberty University School of Law

Former Kansas attorney general Phillip D. Kline joined the faculty of Liberty University School of Law this month as a visiting assistant professor.

As Kansas’ attorney general (2003-07) and more recently as a district attorney (2007-08), Kline said he learned about the mission of Liberty University and the law school and had met Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law.

“We’re partners in the culture wars, essentially, in trying to inject truth into the rule of law into our society,” Kline said.

Kline is most known in the mainstream media for his investigation and prosecution of abortion clinics, although his accomplishments in public service are wide and varied. As attorney general he authored Kansas’ Jessica’s Law, which increased penalties on child predators, and helped establish a Cyber Crimes Task Force that put over 100 Internet predators of children in prison.

Kline said he is a good fit for the job and aligns himself with the mission of Liberty University School of Law.

“The strength of the law is not found simply in the words … but if the truths reflected by those words reside in the heart of a people. The law is merely a tool of those who have power, unless it resides in truth,” he said. “Here at Liberty Law School, we are training up a set of leaders in law who recognize the importance of truth in framing, shaping, interpreting and applying law — and that excites me.”

He said he is enjoying his first job as professor, teaching Advanced Trial Advocacy and Lawyering Skills II.

“I have always wanted to teach, and I always saw my role somewhat as teaching. In public policy you have to attempt to persuade and teach and guide people to understanding the leadership you’re providing. This is a wonderful opportunity, it’s a wonderful transition for my family.”

Kline and his wife Deborah live in Amherst County with their daughter Hillary, 16.
