Band of Leaders club raises money for after-school program

Band of Leaders, a Liberty University student-run club that seeks to strengthen its members’ leadership skills through Christian principles, recently raised $1,200 to benefit The Center in downtown Lynchburg. The Center is an after-school ministry sponsored by All Nations Community Church and provides mentoring and tutoring for elementary to middle-school-aged children.

Treandous Cuthbertson, a sophomore government major who is the founder and president of Band of Leaders, said The Center was in need of funds to pay for snacks and for gas to transport children from their schools and homes to the facility. The club had been searching for an organization to assist in the community and after visiting The Center, he said, members decided it was a perfect fit for their mission.

“When we went down and toured The Center, the students were learning, they were interactive, they were playing games, they had after-school tutoring … the facility was beautiful and it looked like a place where we could really draw into their lives,” Cuthbertson said.

Club members raised money by asking every student who entered Liberty’s Reber-Thomas Dining Hall for a $1 donation each day for a week. After the fundraiser, Band of Leaders hosted a cookout at The Center on April 16, drawing a crowd of about 150 children, parents, volunteers and staff. Liberty students provided musical entertainment. The next day the club attended All Nations Community Church and presented them with a check. State Sen. Steve Newman and state Delegate Scott Garrett were also in attendance.

Cuthbertson said he is proud of the club for meeting its fundraising goal in one week.

“It was our faith mixed with our actions, and of course our actions could only account for so much, but I believe we made up for it in faith. God is good,” Cuthbertson said.

Band of Leaders was founded in August 2010 and currently has about 35 members. The club is planning more fundraisers for several organizations throughout the next school year.
