Spiritual Emphasis Week draws to a close

Students participate in a Spiritual Emphasis Week worship service on Thursday night in the Schilling Center.

Dave Edwards was the featured speaker for Spiritual Emphasis Week.

Spiritual Emphasis Week came to a close Friday at Liberty University as pastor Dave Edwards concluded his week’s messages on God’s will at convocation. Edwards also spoke to students at Wednesday convocation and at a Thursday night service. (A Wednesday night service was canceled due to inclement weather.)

Edwards travels across the U.S. full time speaking to more than 250,000 students and young adults more than 500 times a year. He is also the author of 14 books, including “20 Things You Should Read,” “Everything Twentys,” “The Complete Evangelism Guidebook” and “Life.”

In Monday’s convocation he urged students to strive to live as Jesus did. On Thursday night, he talked about the key to maturity in faith: letting go of selfish desires and trusting God to figure out the details. On Friday, he encouraged students to train up their lives in godliness, so that once they know God’s will for their lives, they can be obedient to it.

Liberty begins each semester with Spiritual Emphasis Week, inviting a powerful speaker or evangelist to spiritually refocus and encourage students. In the past, featured speakers have included Miles McPherson, Clayton King and David Nasser. The week is meant to give non-Christian students an introduction to the gospel as well as encourage student-believers.

“I think it provided another great opportunity for the students to come together and worship God, and to grow in our spiritual lives,” said sophomore Erin Cumbia, who attended all the services.

The week also helps to spiritually prepare new and returning students for the potential stress of beginning a new semester of classes.

“We just came back from a long break and maybe some people have strayed away a little – Spiritual Emphasis Week is always right after school starts, so it can refresh us for the coming year,” said sophomore Marina Ghaly.
