The Fray concert tops long list of Student Activities offerings

The Fray performed at Liberty University on April 26.

College students often have the unique opportunity to attend concerts with big-name bands right at their doorstep, and Liberty University is no different. Liberty’s Student Activities Office works hard to bring in popular groups from across the country. Last month, Grammy Award nominee The Fray — a Colorado-based, pop-rock band — performed to a crowd of more than 4,000 at the Vines Center.

“We’re here to provide quality entertainment at an affordable price for the student body,” said Chris Misiano, director of Student Activities. “[These activities] provide an avenue for community to really happen, and we are excited to be part of that.”

Events sponsored by Student Activities are either free or offered at a discounted rate to students.

Senior Communication Studies major Ashley Eskridge took a break from her final class assignments to catch The Fray in action.

“Being able to step away from class projects for one night was definitely needed,” she said. “Seeing The Fray was a highlight of my semester.”

Student Activities also regularly features the biggest names in Christian music, including Switchfoot, Leeland, David Crowder Band and Casting Crowns.

The office also offers a chance for students to travel off campus for entertainment and recreation. Recently, it hosted a free day trip to Washington, D.C. For some students, it was their first chance to experience the grandeur of our nation’s capital.

“I had never been to Washington, D.C., before and this was the perfect opportunity to go,” said sophomore Kevin James. “The week prior to the trip, I had five tests and two papers due, so to be able to go on this trip and get away for a day was nice.”

Other opportunities offered by the Student Activities Office include whitewater rafting, a scavenger hunt around Lynchburg, movie nights, art shows and a series of races as part of the Liberty Mountain Trail Series. Two of the office’s most popular events are Block Party, a festival with carnival rides, vendors, concert and fireworks to kick off the academic year, and Coffeehouse, which is held each semester and features student talent from music to drama to videos.

Misiano said the office is always looking for new opportunities to offer Liberty students.

“It’s mostly students on staff in the Student Activities Office. They’re constantly trying to listen to their peers for new ideas.”
