Military graduates receive degrees at Fort Bragg ceremony

Military graduates, including nearly 30 from Liberty University, are celebrated at Fort Bragg.Trading fatigues for graduation regalia, nearly 30 service members received their Liberty University degrees at the Fort Bragg (N.C.) Graduation Ceremony on Thursday. The event was part of the post’s National Education Week celebration. Liberty graduates made up the largest representation of any college at the ceremony, which honored 150 graduates from 30 schools.

Fort Bragg, headquarters of the U.S. Army special forces and airborne troops, is one of the largest Army installations in the world.

Dr. Ben Gutierrez, Liberty’s vice provost for academic administration, addressed the graduates, congratulating them on their achievement and thanking them for their service to our country.

Gutierrez shared the stories of a few of the graduates, noting how they managed to juggle family life and active duty service en route to completing their degree. Liberty awarded 33 degrees (not all individuals were able to attend), including one associate, 17 bachelor’s, 13 master’s, and two post-master’s degrees, representing a range of disciplines, including psychology and counseling.

The graduates, like most of Liberty’s military students, studied through the university’s online education program, where they have the flexibility they need to take classes while training, on active duty, or in starting their careers

Gutierrez also noted how proud Liberty is to serve those who defend freedom.

“To our faithful protectors of our country, both on this stage and in this crowd, you will not find a more proud academic institution who will stand by you in thick and thin, plenty and want, peaceful times and turbulent times than Liberty University,” he said. “We both know intimately and care immensely for most all of our students. We cultivate this supportive environment intentionally in order to fulfill our mission of Training Champions for Christ. We believe by supporting you, engaging you, cheering you on to a successful completion, we display a sampling of the love, mercy, and compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ as He laid his life on the line in order for each of us to have eternal life.”

Liberty sent other representatives to support its graduates, including Emily Foutz, director of the Office of Military Affairs.

Liberty is proud to be a military supportive institution, encouraging more than 31,000 military service members, veterans, and their spouses as they earn their degrees. The Office of Military Affairs supports service members, veterans, and their spouses by offering a variety of special events and educational resources specifically for military students. Tuition discounts, book vouchers, and scholarships, as well as family resources and student care (including counseling) are available. Liberty’s commitment to the military community helped Lynchburg rank No. 2 on a list of Best Places for Veterans to pursue a college degree and earned Liberty a spot in the top five online and nontraditional schools in the Military Times “Best for Vets: Colleges 2016” listing.
