New intermediate slope, snow add to Snowflex excitement

The Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre has expanded, unveiling a new intermediate ski slope only three months after opening and just in time for Central Virginia’s first snowfall of the season. Before the new slope, Snowflex users had to focus on making shorter turns and quick adjustments; now the additional terrain allows skiers and snowboarders to make wide and long turns — adding length to their ride and a more gradual descent down the mountain.

While Snowflex is a synthetic material that simulates natural snow and accommodates winter-sport enthusiasts year-round, the new intermediate slope happened to debut just before Lynchburg experienced more than a foot of snow on Dec. 19.

“With the snow we have pretty much turned into a regular ski resort,” said Will Scheren, assistant manager of the Snowflex Centre. “We have received a great response from the public because you can spend the day skiing on fresh powder slopes at a rate more affordable than traditional ski resorts.”

Liberty’s facility is the first of its kind in the U.S. Snowflex slopes range from easy to difficult, challenging skiers and snowboarders at any level of expertise.

“If you can turn and stop, you can ride easily down the slopes,” said Drew Sherwood, director of marketing for the Snowflex Centre. “We also have nursery slopes and instructors to teach beginners how to ski and enjoy our facilities.”

This is the first expansion of the Snowflex facility since its opening in August, but Sherwood says it won’t be the last.

“We definitely want to keep on growing,” he said. “But for the time being, we are going to focus on maintaining and improving the operations of our current facility.”

For now, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy the new slope which Scheren said also offers a great view of the city.

“The view is gorgeous from the top of the new slope,” he said. “Everybody loves it!”

  • For those interested in visiting the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre during LU’s winter break for students, daily hours of operation are 5-10 p.m. through Jan. 17. The Snowflex Centre will be closed on Christmas day.
