Liberty celebrates Military Emphasis Week

November 4, 2009 : Kristen Riordan

In appreciation for the heroes who risk their lives to protect our freedoms, Liberty University celebrates annually with a week dedicated to the military.

“Liberty University makes a point to show our appreciation for our veterans and service members every day through our support offices, student groups and university military benefits, but we want to stop and pay special honor to them during this week,” said Emily Foutz, Director of Military Affairs.

Liberty held a Candlelight Tribute Service Monday night to kick off Military Emphasis Week.

Military Emphasis Week is full of activities ranging from a Marine Corps concert, recruitment booths and a military Q&A panel. Each activity is designed to involve students and faculty in showing appreciation to the armed forces.

At Wednesday’s convocation, Liberty was recognized for its support of the Army National Guard Patriot Academy in Indiana, which provides education to high school dropouts so they can join the armed forces.

Following the recognition, Vietnam veteran and member of LU’s Board of Trustees Dr. Tim Lee addressed the student body.

In March of 1971, Lee lost both legs while leading his men in a mine sweep in Vietnam. What seemed to be a devastating disability has become a blessing to Lee after he answered God’s call on his life to evangelize.

“I’ve never enjoyed life as much as I enjoy it now; my legs are gone, I’m in a wheelchair but today I am in the will of God and … that makes all the difference in the world.”

Lee also cautioned students on the anti-Christian trend of our country and challenged students to take an initiative to put an end to it.

“America must be willing to pay the price, must be willing to continue to make the sacrifices that our fore fathers made so that we might continue to live in this great country with the freedoms that we’ve had for all these years,” Lee said.
