Alumni Weekend ’09 packed with events

Time lapse photography of Saturday’s Homecoming halftime show

It was a time for nostalgia on a rapidly growing campus as Liberty University’s Alumni Weekend helped past graduates experience the “Then and Now.”

Thousands of alumni attended Saturday’s Homecoming game against Coastal Carolina — Liberty won 58-13 — and took advantage of all the other sporting events, recreational activities and new facilities the campus has to offer.

On Friday, a bonfire and pep rally held near the golf range set the tone for the “Red Hot” weekend. Alumni attended a luncheon earlier in the day, where business executives shared their experience in their respective fields and talked about ways to mentor current Liberty students. Many also attended the Chancellor’s Dinner held at the new Barrick-Falwell Lodge at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre. Vernon Brewer, Liberty’s first graduate, spoke about his journey to becoming the founder of WorldHelp, a non-profit, nondenominational relief organization that meets physical and spiritual needs throughout the world. He was presented with the Alumnus of the Year award by the Alumni Relations Office for his incredible impact on the world and support of Liberty University.

On Saturday, early risers participated in a 5K trail race at Camp Hydaway on Liberty Mountain, while later in the day the traditional Homecoming parade wound its way through campus as football tailgating began under a special alumni tent set up near the new Liberty University Barnes & Noble Bookstore. An alumni reception was scheduled for later that night.

Melissa Small, LU’s director of marketing and Alumni Relations, said the weekend drew alumni from all over the country, representing all classes from the school’s 38 years.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. and his wife, Becki, participated in the packed weekend. Alumni especially enjoyed seeing how much the campus has changed, Falwell said, and were encouraged to see so many more students having some of the same experiences they had here on Liberty Mountain.

“This weekend was one of the highlights of the year for Becki and me. The alumni from past decades expressed their delight at the growth and prosperity they saw at Liberty but, more importantly, they were thrilled to see that Liberty remained committed to its original Christian mission. This was encouraging to all of us and we deeply appreciate the faithfulness of our alumni in helping to make Liberty what it is today!”
