Financing your Education at LUCOM

The Financial Aid Office at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) is here to help you finance your medical education during your time at LUCOM. As a participant in various federal aid programs, LUCOM can help you in several ways.

What You Need to Know

  • Student-doctors typically finance their medical education with a combination of scholarships, service agreementsloans, or other forms of federal, state, and outside aid.
  • In the final year of medical school and after graduation, student-doctors often pursue loan repayment and forgiveness programs directed toward service in health-profession-shortage areas, public service, or other federal, state, and private programs.
  • The Financial Aid Office provides group financial aid counseling every year and is available for individual counseling as needed throughout the year.  Additionally, the LUCOM Financial Aid Office offers tailored one-on-one debt management counseling to all student-doctors during the final year of medical school.
  • To maintain eligibility for financial aid, student-doctors must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) each semester.

Getting Started: Four Steps to Financial Aid

In preparing for medical school it is wise to begin the financial aid process as early as possible in order to secure the best funding for your education. This is especially true when it comes to competing for scholarships. The process of securing funding for your medical education can be broken down into four simple steps:

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Complete your FAFSA at StudentAid.Gov with your FSA ID and with Liberty’s school code (010392). You must complete the FAFSA to be considered for federal and institutional aid.
  2. Apply for scholarships and outside aid. For more information on these aid options, visit the LUCOM Scholarship Page. Virginia residents should also apply for the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant.
  3. Apply for loans. Learn about and apply for federal and private loans.
  4. Complete Financial Check-In (FCI). Once you have submitted all necessary requirements for your financial aid eligibility, your next step is completing Financial Check-In (FCI) before each term’s deadline to secure your classes and avoid a $125 late check-in fee. For step-by-step guidance and more information about FCI, please visit the Liberty University FCI webpage.
