Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Lynchburg is the finest small town in the Commonwealth of Virginia to some and our nation’s most patriotic town to others. Established in 1757 as a ferry service across the Fluvanna (James) River we were later granted a charter and founded as Lynchburg in 1786. Thomas Jefferson has a summer home outside of Lynchburg and in 1810 wrote:
“Lynchburg is perhaps the most rising place in the U.S… It ranks now next to Richmond in importance…” He also remarked “Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to be useful to the town of Lynchburg. I consider it as the most interesting spot in the state.”
