Support Academic Accommodations (504)
The Liberty University Online Academy Office of Academic Support (LUOA Academic Support) exists to coordinate support services for our students with disabilities. Pursuant to applicable disability laws and regulations, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, LUOA seeks to provide reasonable disability accommodations and to create equal access to its programs and activities for our students with disabilities in its LUOA K-12 courses and the Liberty University college-level courses offered through LUOA’s dual enrollment program. (LUOA is separate from LUO, and parents are required to complete a separate process through the Office of Disability Accommodation Support (ODAS) for any accommodations that are being requested for Dual Enrollment Courses.)
LUOA Academic Support works in conjunction with faculty, students, and their parents or legal guardians to ensure that reasonable accommodations are provided for students with disabilities in accordance with LUOA policies and processes. If you would like your child to be reviewed for an LUOA 504 Plan, please reach out to LUOAAcademicSupport@liberty.edu.
How do students with disabilities pursue accommodations with LUOA?
- If you are seeking accommodations with LUOA, you will need to apply to LUOA through the Admissions Office. You will be given a link and asked to upload relevant medical documents and/or past academic plans. Once all of the information has been reviewed, you will receive confirmation and further instructions from the LUOA Academic Support Department within 5-10 business days.
- Please note: Accommodations will not be considered unless you have applied with LUOA and intend to enroll.
- We will work with you to help develop a plan to provide accommodations. Accommodations made will be within the scope of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and what LUOA is able to provide.
What about those taking college courses (Dual Enrollment)?
If you are pursuing accommodations in a Dual Enrollment course, you must submit a Notification of Need form and documentation to luoodas@liberty.edu. LUOA 504 plans are not transferrable, and parents must contact the LUO Office of Disability Accommodation Support (ODAS) to request accommodations.
What accommodations do LUOA students typically receive?
- As each student is different and requires different needs, accommodations are made on a case-by-case basis. LUOA does not modify (change) the curriculum.
- Please contact the Academic Support Department by emailing LUOAAcademicSupport@liberty.edu for more information on what can be provided for you!
Will the 504 plan need to be renewed each year with LUOA?
No, 504 plans distributed by LUOA only need to be renewed if you receive a different diagnosis or need additional accommodations to be considered.
I am a point of contact at an LUOA Affiliate School. How do I set up accommodations for my students?
LUOA Academic Support provides limited disability accommodations to students of LUOA-affiliated schools who are enrolled or participate in LUOA programs and activities – but only to the extent that such students are enrolled or participate in LUOA programs and activities, and the accommodations relate to such enrollment or participation in LUOA programs and activities.
For more information about what we offer, reach out to LUOAAffiliates@liberty.edu.
How does the Academy accommodate students who are a grade level behind in 1 or 2 of their subjects?
We handle unique academic situations on a case-by-case basis. We will review records, evaluate possible assessment testing, and discuss the situation with you to create solutions that follow our academic policies and serve the best interests of your student.
How does the Academy work with a student who has a learning disability, such as ADD or ADHD?
In many cases, a child with a learning disability can be placed in a recommended curriculum level. The level recommendation is made by our admissions counselors according to student records and the results of the entrance assessment exam for mathematics. We are able to review 504 documentation and work with you to make reasonable accommodations/modifications.
