Rationale

This survey course introduces the student to political, economic, military, religious, and cultural developments of the ancient, medieval, and early modern periods that constitute the foundation for the modern West. It is a required prerequisite for upper-level courses in European history, and it may also fulfill a portion of the General Education requirement.

Video Discussions (5)

Video discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 5 in this course. For each video discussion, the student will post a 3–5-minute video in response to the provided prompt and provide 2 written replies of at least 200 words. The initial video post must include at least 2 cited sources, and each reply must include at least 1 cited source. Any sources used must be cited in the current format of the student’s chosen writing style (MLA, APA, or Turabian). The videos should have quality audio, and the lighting and background should enhance the video. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E; FSLO: CIL 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5; CT 1, 2, 3, 5; CGE 1 and 5; CC 4).

Evaluative Essay Assignments (2)

The student will write two essay papers, evaluating his/her selected topic-assigned sources alongside biblical Scripture. The essays will be between 600–800 words and must be in current APA, MLA, or Turabian format. In addition to the essay, the student will also submit a 60–90 second video giving a brief description of the chosen topic. The student will take untimed quizzes covering the geographical content of the course textbook. Each quiz consists of 3 questions. There are unlimited attempts, and there is no time limit. (CLO: A, B, C; FSLO: CIL 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5; CT 1, 2, 3, 5; CGE 1 and 5; CC 4).

The student will take untimed quizzes covering the content of the course textbook. Each quiz consists of a various number of questions. These are adaptive style quizzes. Summative Quizzes (14)
