Course Description

A survey of American literature following the American Renaissance. Two critical papers are required.

Rationale

The study of literature helps to fulfill the university aims of fostering competencies in writing, speaking, reading, and appreciation of the arts; contributing to a knowledge and understanding of other cultures and time periods; and integrating theoretical and applied knowledge within the context of a Christian worldview.

Discussions (3)

Over the course of the class, the student will participate in 3 Discussions requiring a thread of 300 words in length and a response to another student of 125 words in length.

Thesis and Outline Assignments (2)

In preparation for each paper, the student will submit a thesis and an outline based on the provided guidelines. The thesis and outline will be due the week before the final paper due dates.

Essays (2)

These essays will follow the posted guidelines and must be submitted in proper, current format (MLA, APA, or Turabian depending on the student’s program of study).

Quizzes (4)

The student will take 4 open-book/open-notes quizzes on the assigned readings and class lectures. Each quiz consists of 30 multiple-choice and reading comprehension questions. The student will have 60 minutes to complete each of these quizzes, with a one-point deduction for each minute the student exceeds the time limit. The student may only take these quizzes once.
