Course Description
This course is designed to familiarize the student with the criminal correctional system in the United States. The student will review the history of corrections and procedural, statutory, and case law of American correction.

- Contributes .5 credits to LUOA – Fine Art/Career/Tech Ed, Fine Art/Career/Technical Ed Requirement.
Rationale
The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an overview of the American correctional system in preparation for further study or career opportunities in the field of criminal justice.

Discussions (4)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to share his or her own informed opinion in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be at least 250 words with a minimum of 2 citations from at least 2 scholarly sources. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words.
Mini-Paper Assignments (2)
The body of each Mini-Paper Assignment must be no more than 3 pages. Each paper must be in current APA format and must include a title page, body, and reference page. Each paper must include at least 2 relevant and reliable sources in addition to the Bible.
Course Project: Rough Draft Assignment and Course Project: Final Assignment
The student will work to create a PowerPoint presentation containing specific information to consider in the planning and creation of a correctional facility. The student will first submit a Rough Draft containing at least 5 slides, including the title slide, and at least 2 sources in current APA format.
Upon reviewing feedback on his or her Rough Draft, the student will complete the PowerPoint presentation for the facility plans. The completed presentation must have at least 5 sources in current APA format and contain at least 10 slides, not including the title and reference slides.
Read & Interact Textbook Assignments (13)
Within this course, students will be required to read and interact with the textbook within the third party platform, SmartBook. Students must complete each reading and item in the textbook in order to earn the points associated with the assigned reading.
The student will access a homework assignment through the McGraw Hill platform. The homework is based on the material in the text. In addition, McGraw Hill may be accessed outside of Canvas. At the end of the assigned module, McGraw Hill will automatically grade the Homework Assignment.
