Rationale

The ultimate goal of this course is to enable the student to communicate effectively in German. The focus is on the development of the four communicative skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing (in order of priority). Because German is the most widely spoken native language in Europe and ranks third among all second languages studied worldwide, knowledge of this language opens unique doors of opportunity in fields such as Christian service, education, international relations, scientific research, technology, and global commerce.

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will discuss cultural and other aspects of Germany and the German language while integrating Christian worldview perspectives. The student is required to write a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must contain at least 100 words. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 25 words. (CLO: B; FSLO: CGE 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; CIL 2)

Video Discussion: All About Me

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will record answers in German to the provided questions for the Video Discussion: All About Me and submit the recording as an initial thread. In addition to the thread, the student is required to provide a written response to 2 other classmates’ threads, providing encouragement and specific feedback. (CLO: B, D; FSLO: CGE 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; CIL 1, 2, 3)

Rosetta Stone Assignments (4)

For each Rosetta Stone (RS) Assignment, the student will complete 1 unit consisting of 32 exercises divided into 4 lessons and culminating in a Milestone. The lessons address listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as vocabulary and sentence structure, and prepare the student to successfully complete each Milestone. Upon completion of each unit, the student is required to download the appropriate Learner Report PDF from RS and submit the report in Canvas. (CLO: A, B, C; FSLO: CIL 2, 3)

Quiz: Rosetta Stone Live Tutoring Session (3)

The student will complete 3 Live Tutoring sessions within the Rosetta Stone program to develop fluency in understanding and speaking German. After each Live Tutoring Session, the student will complete a quiz to verify completion of the session and attach the RS report showing the completed tutoring time. Each quiz contains 1 file upload question, is limited to 1 hour, and allows 2 attempts. (CLO: C, D, E; FSLO: CIL 1, 3)

Grammar Quizzes (6)

There will be 6 quizzes throughout the course that will assess the student’s knowledge of the grammar concepts covered in the textbook. Each quiz is open-book/open-notes, contains 10 multiple-choice, matching, ordering, or true/false questions, and has a 20-minute time limit. (CLO: B, C, D)

Quiz: Practice for Final Oral Exam

The student will complete this practice for the Quiz: Final Oral Exam in order to get familiar with the types of questions to expect and the technology needed to submit video responses to the questions. The student will review responses to the previous speaking discussion in German and other class materials to prepare for this practice quiz. (CLO: B, C, D, E; CGE: 5)

Quiz: Final Oral Exam

The quiz contains 6 multiple-choice questions that assess listening comprehension, and 11 questions that the student will answer with a speaking video to apply the appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation learned throughout the course.
