Course Description

This foundational course will utilize a theory based approach for developing and improving fingerspelling recognition. A unique training method will be used to improve a student’s comprehension of this vital aspect of American Sign Language (ASL). Various number systems used within ASL will also be addressed.

Rationale

Fingerspelling and numbering are essential components of ASL fluency. This course addresses specificities such as speed, palm orientation, and context, providing students with tools to overcome barriers to fluency.

Course Assignment

Discussions (8)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the Discussions for this course cover specific topics and enable the student to interact with study materials and his/her peers. For each Discussion, the student will provide a thorough written response to the prompt, using at least 200 words. Current MLA-formatting should be used for any in-text citations, and a citation list must be included at the end of any post that uses sources. The student will also reply to 2 peers with specific observations, additions, questions, analyses, and references to resources. Each reply should be a minimum of 100 words. If sources are used, the student will follow current MLA format to provide in-text citations and a citation list at the end of each reply post.

Signing Video Assignments (4)

The student will record and upload a video demonstrating the fingerspelling, American Sign Language skills acquired throughout the module. The content of the video should address the required prompt, as well as any learning materials and skills (accurate signs, vocabulary, structure, pacing/rhythm, non-manual markers, etc.) from each associated module. It should follow the provided instructions and length/content parameters. The student must be fully visible in the video from the waist up, with good lighting, camera angle/distance, and an uncluttered background.

ASL Fingerspelling Report Assignment

For this assignment, the student will write a 1-page paper that explores the relationship between ASL fingerspelling and the development of English reading skills. 

Lexicalized Fingerspelling Identification Assignment

This activity is designed to help the student strengthen his/her ability to communicate effectively in American Sign Language by recognizing and understanding fingerspelled words in real time. The student will watch a video and record answers to the signs presented in the video using a template for submission.

Reading Response Assignment

For this assignment, the student will read and respond to an article relating to American Sign Language. He/she will analyze the article’s ideology and how it might shape his/her approach to signing, learning, or interacting with deaf individuals.

Fingerspelling Final Assessment Assignment

For this assessment, the studenet will show what he/she learned throughout the study of fingerspelling in American Sign Language. The assessment has five sections with short answer and written response questions. The student will watch a video and record answers to the signs presented in the video using a template for submission.
