Rationale

Many individuals go through their daily routines with little thought as to what influences their own thoughts and behaviors, as well as the behavior of those around them. They seem unaware of how other people influence their thoughts and behavior. Still, others attempt to understand and explain their behavior, but their explanations are inaccurate. This course will seek to explain how the student’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual or imagined presence of others so that the student can better understand him/herself and those around him/her.

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussion: Persuasion

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 1 discussion during the term. The student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt. The thread must include a link to a brief advertisement/video clip. The thread must also include a paragraph demonstrating course-related knowledge. For the thread, the student must use and cite the textbook, and Scripture in current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must include 150-250 words and cite at least 1 item of information from the textbook. (CLO: A, C)

Big Ideas in Social Psychology Video Assignment

Understanding the major concepts of social psychology will provide the student a foundation for success in this course. To help ensure understanding of these basic concepts (also described by the textbook authors as “Big Ideas”) the student will be asked to record a  3-5 minute video within which he/she will introduce him or herself, identify each of these “Big Ideas” within the textbook, select a quote that summarizes the concept, provide a real-life example of the concept, and reflect on what the Bible says about the concept. In addition, a conclusion is requied in which the student indicates what topic most interests him or her. The student must be visible on camera. The information should be shared in a conversational manner rather than reading a script. (CLO: A)

Real World 1: Social Beliefs and Attitudes Assignment

For this assignment, the student will thoroughly describe an example in popular media or the news for either of the following scenarios: 1) a person’s attitude predicted their behavior, 2) a person’s behavior predicted their attitude. In addition, the student will thoroughly describe a person in the Bible where either of these is demonstrated. To conclude the paper, the student will also reflect on what this tells us about human behavior (what can we reasonably expect from people)? The paper must be 500-700 words and be in current APA format. (CLO: A, D)

The Jigsaw Classroom Assignment

For this assignment, students will explore information provided about the Jigsaw Classroom provided in Canvas for this module then write a paper in which they describe the Jigsaw Classroom technique (how it was developed and implemented), describe a scenario in which the Jigsaw Classroom technique is used to overcome barriers in a home, school, work, or church setting, and finally, the student will evaluate this technique in relationship to Biblical principles. The paper will include 500-700 words of content in addition to the title page and references page. Current APA formatting is required. (CLO: A, B, C)

Research Comparison and Analysis Assignment

The student will examine two empirical, peer-reviewed articles (provided in Canvas) then analyze and discuss the findings in a brief paper (500-700 words). This assignment must include citations from the textbook and both articles. The paper should be in current APA format. (CLO: C, D)

Attraction and Intimacy Interview Assignment

For this assignment, the student will conduct an interview and compare the experiences of a couple you know with the key principles found in our textbook related to attraction and intimacy (Chapter 11). A series of questions is provided in the assignment instructions to guide the interview process. The body text for this assignment must include 500-700 words, and must include citations from the textbook and scripture. Current APA format must be used. (CLO: C)

Helping Behavior Q & A Assignment

For this assignment students will download the Helping Behavior Q & A Template provided in Canvas. After reading each prompt carefully, students will respond using information from our textbook, from real-life scenarios (if requested) and scripture (if requested). Answers should be based on information from our textbook rather than opinion. Do not include direct quotes; instead, paraphrase information from our textbook to demonstrate your understanding. Each response should include 3-5 complete sentences. Include a citation to identify the source of any information that is not considered common knowledge. (CLO: A, C, D)

Quizzes (8)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the Module: Week in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, allow 1 attempt, contain 50 multiple-choice questions, and have a 1-hour time limit. (CLO: B, C, D)
