Course Description

Investigation of material components used by the designer that includes specification of surface finishes, architectural details and furnishings.

Rationale

A functional knowledge of material components used in residential interiors is foundational to creative application for the professional interior designer. The ability to compare and contrast material components provides a basis for specifying materials appropriate for intended use. Method of installation and maintenance are factors to be considered.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to listed topics. The thread must be at least 300 words and reference at least 1 scholarly source in addition to the course textbook and the links provided in the thread. The Bible must also be cited but will not count toward the required number of scholarly sources. All references must be cited in current APA format and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to at least 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be least 150 words and reference a scholarly or practitioner source cited in current APA format.

Product Research Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will research and record specification information for the listed material or product by providing the required details in the initial thread. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to at least 2 other classmates’ threads by proposing an equal material or product to the item presented and providing the required information to demonstrate an equal comparison.

Kitchen Layout Assignment

The student will analyze an existing kitchen layout using industry standards for kitchen design and universal design standards. The student will provide a selection for a countertop surface based on provided design criteria.

Universal and Sustainable Design Project Assignment

The student will prepare a material specification including FF&E and finishes for a small renovation project that includes a maximum budget. The student will prepare a cost summary to demonstrate the project is within budget parameters.

Quizzes (7)

There will be 7 quizzes that test the student’s knowledge of the assigned textbook reading. Each quiz will cover the textbook reading for the assigned Module: Week. These quizzes contain 14–25 multiple-choice, matching, and short answer questions and have a 1-hour time limit.
