CSPA102: Conversational Spanish II

Course Description

This course will further the objectives of CSPA 101 by expanding students’ practical conversational skills. Intended for students whose first language is not Spanish but who have previous Spanish training and/or experience through CSPA 101.

Rationale

The increasing importance of the Spanish language in the United States and the growth of a global marketplace as well as a ministry field make the study of Spanish and foreign languages valuable. It is the goal of the conversational courses at Liberty University for the student to engage this world effectively in Spanish and to grow in his/her appreciation of the Hispanic cultures. This course recognizes the value of language study and assumes that the student is genuinely interested in learning to communicate practically in Spanish.

Discussion: Video Presentations in Spanish

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to participate in 1 Discussion, which involves creating a video main thread of 1 to 2 minutes and two video replies of 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Rosetta Stone Assignments (8)

The student will complete a total of 8 units, which comprise all the lessons in Level 2, Units 5–8 and Level 3, Units 9–12. The units will assess speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills introduced in the unit. RS unit grades will be calculated as an average score of the Lesson 1 Core Lesson, Lesson 2 Core Lesson, Lesson 3 Core Lesson,  Lesson 4 Core Lesson, Level 5 Milestone. These assignments will be accessed and completed through Rosetta Stone.

Spanish Video Assignment

The student will complete the Spanish video assignment (2-3 minutes) on a topic given by the instructor.

Quiz: To-Do List

The student will answer the 7 true/false questions in this quiz which will not have a time limit. In preparation for this quiz, the student will be highly encouraged to review the provided study guide documents before attempting this quiz.

Quiz: Language Learning Expectations

The student will describe his or her background in learning a second language, his or her expectations for learning a second language, and his or her plans for learning a second language. (CLO: F)

Quizzes: Rosetta Stone Live Coaching Session (6)

The student will complete 5 Live Coaching sessions within the Rosetta Stone program. Once the session has been completed, the student will complete the respective Quiz: Rosetta Stone Live Coaching Session, detailing the session.

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module: weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 4 true/false,  file-upload, and essay questions, and have a 1 hour time limit. (CLO: A, B, C)

Quiz: Midterm Grammar Review

The quiz will address certain vocabulary and/or grammar concepts learned, and will assess reading and writing skills specifically. This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module: weeks. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 multiple-choice, true/false, matching, and fill-in-the-blank questions and have a 1 hour time limit.

Prior to the Spanish Oral Interview Quiz, the student will complete a 3 video-question practice quiz with a 10-minute time limit to get acquainted with the technology required in the Spanish Oral Interview quiz.

Quiz

This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module: weeks. This quiz will require the student to answer 12 video questions in a video format without relying on notes or English to convey meaning. This quiz has a time limit of 30 minutes.  (CLO: A, B, C)

Quiz: Final Grammar Assessment

The quiz will address certain vocabulary and/or grammar concepts learned, and will assess reading and writing skills specifically. This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module: weeks. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 36 multiple-choice, true/false, matching, and fill-in-the-blank questions and have a 1 hour time limit.

Quiz: Language Reflection

The student will identify and reflect on his or her own language learning experiences. This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module: weeks. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 6 essay questions and have a 2 hour time limit. (CLO: D)
