CFRE101: Conversational French I

Course Description

An introductory course designed to develop practical conversational French skills. Intended for students whose first language is not French and/or have no previous French training and/or experience.

This course is being offered in order to provide more marketability and competitiveness to our students. After English, French is the primary language of international business and is often sought after in governmental agencies such as the CIA and FBI. It is spoken on five continents, in over 40 countries, and is the official language in more than 20. Africa has more countries than any other continent that speak French, most of which are Muslim; and Europe has several French speaking, primarily atheistic countries not very skilled in foreign language, making the French language a necessity in missions work.

Quiz: Grammar Diagnostic

Students will complete a quiz at the beginning of the course to check on their level of comprehension. They will receive a completion grade regardless of their grade. Students can return and view their progress at the end of the course.  (CLO: A, C, D, E; FSLO: CGE: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5)

Rosetta Stone Assignments (4)

The student will work through Units 1–4 in Rosetta Stone. Each Rosetta Stone unit will have 5 lessons which the student will need to complete during the assigned Module: Week. Each unit will be graded as an average score from the core lessons and the milestone, all of which assess student achievement during that unit. (CLO: A, B, C, and D; FSLO: CIL 1)

Quiz: Rosetta Stone Live Coaching Session (5)

The student will complete 5 Live Coaching sessions within the Rosetta Stone program. Once the session has been completed, the student will complete the respective Quiz: Rosetta Stone Live Coaching Session. (CLO: A, B, and C; FSLO: CGE 1, 2, and 3; CIL 1, 2, and 3)

Quiz: Grammar Concepts (4)

There will be 4 quizzes throughout the course that will address certain learned vocabulary and/or grammatical concepts. Specifically, the quizzes will assess reading, writing, and grammar skills. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and include multiple-choice, true/false, short-answer, and/or matching questions. All quizzes have a 1-hour time limit. (CLO: E)

Oral Assessment Assignment

The student will complete the Oral Assessment Assignment by submitting a presentation showing the student’s comprehension of French. (CLO: A, B, and C)

Quiz: Written Assessment

The Quiz: Written Assessment will assess what you have learned so far when it comes to writing using French. You will write five complete sentences in French on anything you have learned in your course so far. (The dog is large. I have a sister…etc.)

Final Exam Assignments (3)

The Final Exam will consist of 3 parts: the oral portion, the written portion, and the grammar portion.

Final Oral Exam Assignment

The Oral Final Exam will require you to do two things. First, schedule a conference with Rosetta Stone tutoring and work on the modules you have needed to practice the most. Make sure to set up your appointment in advance. You can find the questions above under the attachment Oral Final Exam Instructions. Second, you will complete the exam by creating a video on YouTube as per the guidelines and submitting the link in the appropriate box for grading. (CLO: A, B, C)

Quiz: Final Written Exam

The student will complete a written portion of the Final Exam. The written portion will be open-book/open-notes; cumulative; contain 1 essay question; and have a 45-minute time limit. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)

Quiz: Final Grammar Exam

The quiz will be open-book/open-notes; cumulative; contain 45 multiple choice, essay, and short-answer questions; and have a 1 hour and 30-minute time limit.
