Course Description

This course examines the management of human capital from a strategic perspective. This course includes topics such as HR Strategy, Planning, Recruitment, Staffing, Training and Development, Retention, Performance Management, and Compensation, emphasizing the relationship between these strategic HRM practices and organizational effectiveness.

Rationale

Most human resources management (HRM) courses are designed for current or future HRM professionals; this course is presented from the general manager’s perspective. Managers, whatever their department or function, work with people and are constantly faced with people issues. While the HRM Department can offer assistance in some areas, it is management’s responsibility to resolve most of these issues. This course is a review of many of the important people issues confronted in organizations. It will provide a knowledge base in basic human resources topics and an in-depth review of the important current issues in the field.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be 300-500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ posts. Each reply must be 250-350 words. The thread must include a scripture reference, at least 2 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources, and the course text. Each reply must include a scripture reference, at least 1 scholarly source, and the course text. All sources used should be cited in current APA format.

Read and Interact (8)

Each week there will be a Read and Interact activity covering the chapters in each Module: Week. These assignments will provide the student an opportunity to review concepts discussed in the material from that Module: Week. 

Research Paper Assignments (3)

Research Paper: Topic Assignment

The student will choose 1 of the topics from the provided list and will submit a 50-word explanation of why he or she selected that topic.  

Research Paper: Outline and References Assignment

The student will submit a full sentence outline and reference page in preparation for the final research paper. The outline must include the thesis statement, questions/issues being addressed, and an outline structure on how the paper will be organized. The reference page must include at least 5 scholarly, peer-reviewed references that are less than 10 years old. Current APA format must be used. 

Research Paper: Final Assignment

The student will write a 5-6 page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on a topic selected from a list of topics provided in the paper instructions. The paper must include at least 5 scholarly, peer-reviewed references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible. The paper must include a title page and reference page.

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 40 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 1-hour time limit.
