Course Description

Explores legal and ethical issues encountered in the provision and delivery of healthcare products and services. Topics explored include, but are not limited to, introduction to healthcare law and ethics, making ethical decisions, contracts, medical records and informed consent, privacy law, and HIPAA.

Rationale

The purpose of this course is to expose the student to a select group of contemporary legal and ethical issues faced by managers in today’s healthcare business environment and to provide the student with the knowledge necessary to recognize legal and ethical problems in that environment. This course also equips the student with the ability to critically analyze and address legal and ethical issues in healthcare delivery and management in accordance with a Christian worldview.

Course Assignment

Textbook readings and lecture presentations

Textbook readings are presented through SmartBook adaptive learning technology. The student will respond to questions throughout the reading and receive points for correct completion of each chapter.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. The student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words. For each thread and each reply, the student must support conclusions with at least 2 sources cited in current APA format. All written work also requires Biblical worldview integration.

Malpractice Apology Annotated Bibliography Assignment

The student will conduct research to support a paper that focuses on the use of acknowledgement of error and apology in addressing professional malpractice in healthcare. The student will report initial research results in an Annotated Bibliography that includes at least 8 scholarly sources other than the course Learn materials and the Bible, cited in current APA format. At least 2 of the sources must relate to the student’s own area of practice in healthcare, and at least 2 of the sources must relate to biblical worldview considerations of the topic.

Malpractice Apology Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on the use of acknowledgement of error and apology in addressing professional malpractice in healthcare. The Research Paper must be at least 1,200 words and include at least 4 references in addition to the course Learn materials and the Bible.

Quizzes (4)

The student will complete 4 quizzes in Connect. Each quiz will cover the course Learn material for the assigned module and the immediately preceding module. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and contain 20 multiple-choice and true/false questions.
