Course Description

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of biblical interpretation and hermeneutical procedures. The student will develop the skills to practice a methodical approach to the observation, interpretation, and application of the Scripture across its various genres.

    • BIB 3301 previously completed with a minimum grade of D

    • BIB 3106 previously completed with a minimum grade of D
         and
    • BIB 3301 previously completed with a minimum grade of D

High School Diploma Requirements*

  • Contributes .5 credits to LUOA – Fine Art/Career/Tech Ed, Fine Art/Career/Technical Ed Requirement.

Christians trust that the Bible is the final rule of faith, belief, and practice. An aptitude in Bible study is essential for both life and ministry. Therefore, the ability to properly read, interpret, and apply the Bible is foundational for all. Consequently, the skills taught and the tools used in this course will prepare the student for a rich and enjoyable study of God’s Word.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. The thread must be at least 500 words and demonstrate a comprehension of the corresponding course reading. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. The student will complete a Book Survey Assignment over a given text of Scripture. The student will use the provided worksheet to examine specific Bible passages. All assignments in this course are scaffolded assignments building up to the final Passage Study Assignment and will utilize the process of observation, interpretation, and application to arrive at a hermeneutically sound exegesis of the given passage. The student will complete 2 Observation Assignments over a given text of Scripture. The student will use the provided worksheets to examine specific Bible passages. All assignments in this course are scaffolded assignments building up to the final Passage Study Assignment and will utilize the process of observation, interpretation, and application to arrive at a hermeneutically sound exegesis of the given passage. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

The student will complete an Interpretation Assignment over a given text of Scripture. The student will use the provided worksheet to examine specific Bible passages. All assignments in this course are scaffolded assignments building up to the final Passage Study Assignment and will utilize the process of observation, interpretation, and application to arrive at a hermeneutically sound exegesis of the given passage. The student will complete an Application Assignment over a given text of Scripture. The student will use the provided worksheet to examine specific Bible passages. All assignments in this course are scaffolded assignments building up to the final Passage Study Assignment and will utilize the process of observation, interpretation, and application to arrive at a hermeneutically sound exegesis of the given passage. The student will complete a Passage Study Assignment over a given text of Scripture. The student will use the provided worksheet to examine specific Bible passages. This assignment utilizes the material from the previous assignments to arrive at a hermeneutically sound exegesis of the given passage. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Quiz: Knowable Word

This quiz covers the content from the assigned textbook reading. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 75 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a time limit of 90 minutes. The student will be allowed 2 attempts, and the highest score will count toward his or her grade. (CLO: A, C)
