Course Description

Continuation of CMUS 105. Course concepts include structural analysis, seventh chords, melody harmonization, non-chord tones, commercial vocal and keyboard techniques, and chromatic harmony. Includes harmonic analysis of tonal music in commercial music contexts with application to real-world situations.

Prerequisite Requirements*

Any of the following:

  • MUS 3105 previously completed with a minimum grade of D

  • WMU 3103 previously completed with a minimum grade of D

Rationale

Music theory courses are often devoted to the study of traditional, classical theory and aural skills. Their goal is to provide an overview of western art music in order to give students the language needs for musical endeavors. This course fulfills that goal but move one step further in that it provides practical and immediate application of the acquired skills to the chosen profession. This vocational approach directly corresponds with the trade industry through the study of popular genres including, but not limited to: jazz, gospel, country, worship, gospel song, and traditional hymn tunes.

Worksheet Assignments (9)

The student will complete a number of unique Worksheet Assignments that focus on many elements of music. The exercises needed to complete each assignment are drawn from the workbook of Music Theory for the Christian Musician and are housed in a software called Flat. The worksheet assignments consistent of various musical scores that the student manipulates. 

Metric Harmonization Assignment

The student will provide the chords for a given melody.

Vocal Parts Assignment

The student will apply learned concepts to a real-world scenario by preparing a lecture that outlines vocal part writing. Students will provide the vocal parts for a section of a piece. 

Final Assignment

The final project is the culmination of the course content. Each student will work to apply learned concepts. The student will harmonization a melody with more “advanced” chords, analyze music with TSDT, notate non-chord tones, and provide vocal parts for a given excerpt.

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the module in which it is assigned. The quizzes will be open-book/open-notes and contain multiple-choice questions.
