Course Description

This is an intensive course in intermediate financial accounting theory and practice concepts like accounting for investments, liabilities, retirement plans, income taxes, and shareholders’ equity. The course balances the study of accounting theory and applied learning exercises, such as the use of data analysis tools in the application of accounting practices and procedures.

Rationale

The accounting student who seeks professional success in his or her career needs to understand both theory and practice in order to meet the challenges that await in the future. Knowing alternatives to current practice can enhance the student’s understanding of accounting practices that may evolve in the future.

Read and Interact Assignments (10)

For each Read and Interact Connect assignment, the student will read the e-textbook and answer interactive questions to master the accounting concepts in each assigned textbook chapter. 

Homework Assignments (10)

The student will be assigned homework to complete in Connect. At the end of the assigned modules, Connect will automatically grade all of the assignments, and the instructor will then download the results and place the scores within Canvas (assignments may be submitted multiple times with detailed feedback provided; the highest score of all submissions will be posted in Canvas). Time spent on each homework assignment will vary by the module: week, as well as by the level of comprehension and mastery of the subject matter.

Homework: Integrated Excel Problem Assignments (6)

The student will complete Excel spreadsheet assignments to master navigating the software, analyzing the information, and developing conclusions about the calculation results.

GAAP Research Paper Assignment

The student will prepare a research paper applying authoritative accounting guidance using the FASB Accounting Standards Codification (ASC), which is the official source of U.S. GAAP, IFRS, and scholarly sources to address a topic discussed in this course. 

Quizzes (4)

The student will complete quizzes within Connect. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, consist of 30 questions, and have a time limit of 2 hours. The student will be allowed 1 attempt at each quiz.
