Course Description

This course will prepare students for interpreting training. Student will examine ASL from a new perspective. Concepts such as main idea comprehension, summarizing, lexical substitution, paraphrasing, paraphrasing discourse, visual form and meaning will be addressed.

This course emphasizes advanced language proficiency, equipping the student with the skills needed for effective communication and interpretation. By focusing on both expressive and receptive abilities, the student gains the foundation required for interpreting training.

Discussions (8)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the Discussions for this course cover specific topics and enable the student to interact with study materials and his/her peers. For each Discussion, the student will follow the unique instructions for each prompt with either a 30 second to 1 minute verbal response posted via video or a thorough written response of at least 200 words with at least 2 sources. Current MLA-formatting should be used for all in-text citations, and a citation list must be included at the end of each post that uses sources. The student will also reply to 2 peers with specific observations, additions, questions, analyses, and references to resources. Each reply should be a minimum of 100 words. If sources are used, the student will follow current MLA format to provide in-text citations and a citation list at the end of each reply post.

Signing Video Assignments (6)

The student will record and upload a video demonstrating the American Sign Language skills acquired throughout the module. The content of the video should address the required prompt, as well as any learning materials and skills (accurate signs, vocabulary, structure, pacing/rhythm, non-manual markers, etc.) from each associated module. It should follow the provided instructions and length/content parameters. The student must be fully visible in the video from the waist up, with good lighting, camera angle/distance, and an uncluttered background. 

Deaf Gain Analysis Assignment

Using 200-300 words, the student will write an analysis relating to the concept of Deaf Gain. He/she will respond to questions and prompts associated with the topic. The analysis requires MLA formatting of the paper and proper citations for any sources used.

Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a 2-3-page report on a topic of his/her choice directly relating to the relevance, influence, and accomplishments of a prominent Deaf artist, storyteller, or cultural figure. The paper will include an introduction with a thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion that aligns with the assignment instructions. The student will research the topic using quality sources and include quotes from at least 2 sources to support his/her claims. Scripture may be included in addition to the other required sources. All references should use proper MLA citations, including a Works Cited page. The student should use clear, logical organization throughout and follow all writing expectations outlined in the grading rubric. The paper should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font, and correct MLA formatting.
